Mission Statement for IAC
Our community will foster global awareness among social studies educators. We will: • Share lessons and resources with a global perspective • Publicize and discuss global issues • Organize and promote sessions at NCSS • Facilitate community among global minded NCSS members
The 2009 meeting opened with
The 2009 meeting opened with three important reports on groups active in promoting internatinal understanding and global education: the Peace Corps world Wide Schools which mainly operates online and which encourages participation from returing Peace Corps volunteers and continues to encourage members to discuss global issues and keep abreast new developments in the international community; The Center for the Study of Global Change at Indiana University represented by Professor Deborah Hutton who discussed how 5000 internatinal students at the university provide a great deal of activity at the university and in the community; and The Middle East Center at Arizona University headed by Professor Lisa Adeli who provided a rich listing of materials available in national resource centers dealing with global issues as well as opportunities for travel abroad. Dr. Adeli ended with an indepth discussion of a recent tour of students to the Ottoman Empire and the Balkans. The meeting ended with the group seeking ways to keep up conversation throughout the year.
