These are the purposes and duties of the Early Childhood/Elementary Community

To investigate, consider, and propose ways to define, promote and enhance the teaching of social studies at the early childhood and elementary grade levels in public and private schools throughout the world. These efforts extend to NCSS and various other interest groups.

To investigate, consider, and propose ways to define, promote, and enhance social studies teaching in the early childhood-elementary levels among professionals, their clients, and the society.

To investigate, consider and propose ways to promote and enhance social studies education for students and teachers at all levels of social studies education so that foundational and transitional needs are met at the early childhood and elementary grade levels.

To monitor ongoing NCSS publications, programs, policies, and activities to determine the extent to which these are consistent with council policies regarding social studies education at the early childhood and elementary grade levels.

To provide input to the board and executive director as requested in matters consistent with the committee’s purposes and duties.

To advise the board as to concerns and issues as well as recommend possible policies and actions for the board on matters consistent with the committee’s purposes and duties.

To serve as resource persons to NCSS members with specific early childhood and elementary grade level concerns in the area of social studies education.
